Simply Misty
Erroll Garner wrote Misty, the standard of all standards, in 1954 and it has gone on to become one of the bedrock tunes of the jazz repertoire. Or has it? You will hear it requested and dutifully performed at piano bars the world over and there is no shortage of pop-influenced vocal recordings of it but there are relatively few jazz recordings of the tune. This may be because it is typically played in an over-the-top, florid and showy style (thanks to Mr. Garner's original conception courtesy of Art Tatum) which overshadows it's beautiful melody and elegant chord changes. Watch this lesson and witness a tasteful and sophisticated reading of the tune- simply Misty- using spread voicings, rootless voicings with added tension, upper structure triads, 4 way close, 4th, 5th and constant structure voicings.
